Spiced & Spiked Hot Campfire Cider

spiced-apple-cider.png

If you’re entering into a chilly camp after a long day of adventuring, this Spiced Hot Cider will be the perfect warm-up drink around the campfire. It has all those cozy spices that make a mulled cider fantastic. You can either make this in a pressure cooker at home to bring in mason jars (so easy!) to heat up at camp or you can make it at camp. It’s better with time, so it might just be perfect if you have an early start before dinner. If you’re looking for a lighter and more hydrating option check out our Lemon Ginger Brew to warm you up.

10 apples, cored and chopped
1/2 c dark brown sugar
1 orange, peeled
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
1/2 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp smoked salt flakes
1/4 tsp nutmeg
4-6 c filtered water
8 dehydrated orange slices
Bourbon (optional)

Camp: Add all ingredients minus bourbon and dehydrated oranges into a large camp pot or Dutch oven and cover, adding just enough water to cover. Cook over the fire, camp stove, or with the charcoal method for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and use a masher to mash up all the cooked fruit. Strain the liquid using a fine-mesh strainer into another container carefully. Mash down the cooked fruit to get out excess liquid. Serve 4oz hot cider with 1.5 oz bourbon and a dehydrated orange slice.

Pressure Cooker (Instapot): Add everything minus Bourbon and dehydrated oranges into the pot adding just enough water to cover. Set to manual and cook on high pressure for 25 minutes. Use steam release before opening. Use a masher to mash all the apples and strain them into a container over a fine mesh strainer. Use the back of a spoon out all the juice. Serve 6oz hot cider with 1.5oz bourbon and a dehydrated orange.

Makes 8 servings (2 mason jars)
